Our defense was outstanding and couldn’t be more pleased,” said head coach Rick Fox.The Bulldogs’ defense limited Valpo to just 43 yards rushing and 165 yards passing, led by fifth-year senior linebacker John Hugunin. Hugunin was all over the field for Drake, as he recorded his first career interception, blocked a punt, forced a fumble and tallied seven tackles (five solo). John Bloss and Michael Roane also registered seven tackles apiece to round Drake’s top tacklers.Offensively, the Bulldogs saw junior running back Conley Wilkins score three touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving. And the offensive line is giving them a chance to run with it, so we need to continue to have that,” said Fox. Hugunin blocked a punt near the end of the first quarter set up the Bulldogs to score the first points of the game. Rice found Gallery deep in the middle of the field for a 32-yard reception to put Drake on the three yard line. On the very next play, Willkins had his first carry of the game be a three-yard touchdown, to put Drake up 7-0.The Bulldogs then went up 14-0 early in the second quarter on a four-yard touchdown run by Wilkins.Drake managed to get the ball into Crusader territory a few more times in the second quarter but came up empty, taking a 14-0 lead at halftime.Drake relied on Wilkins on the opening drive of the third quarter as he totaled 66 of Drake’s 89 yards recorded in the 11-play scoring drive. The Bulldogs drove down to Valpo’s 12 yard line and went for it on fourth and four. Quarterback Andy Rice was flushed from the pocket and found an open Wilkins, and Wilkins went on to leap into the end zone to give Drake a 21-0 advantage. On Valpo’s ensuing drive, the Bulldogs stopped the Crusaders on fourth and three, giving DU’s offense the ball on Valpo’s 41 yard line. Drake took advantage of the great field position once again with Reichardt capping off the eight-play drive by scoring his first collegiate touchdown to push Drake’s lead to 28-0 with just over four minutes left in the third quarter.Midway through the fourth-quarter, Valpo  was finally able to break through Drake’s stout defense when Ryan Clarke completed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Frank Catrine.Prior to Valpo’s touchdown, Josh Lee nailed a 37 yard field goal and then made a 35-yard field after the Crusaders’ score for a final score of 34-7.Drake travels to San Diego on Oct. 17 with kickoff set for 2 p.m. local time.Print Friendly Version Full Schedule Roster Conley Wilkins Story Linkscenter_img Photo Gallery Preview at San Diego 10/17/2015 – 4:00 PM John Bloss Rick Fox Michael Roane last_img read more
