Fanad went into the lead early in the half with a goal and several points before Aodh had the chance to reply themselves. Fanad’s goalkeeper Oisin Blaney did very well to save several Aodh Ruadh attempts and Fanad took a healthy 1.09 – 0.03 point lead into the second half. The second half did not start as well for Fanad when, after a Jerry Diver point, Oisin Blaney found himself picking the ball out of the back of the Fanad net after a poor clearance led to a tapped-in goal by Aodh Ruadh. Another 2 points followed quickly for the Ballyshannon men and the sizeable gap was reduced to just 5 points. 1:10 – 1:05 Aodh Ruadh applied a lot of pressure around the Fanad goalmouth and but for excellent defending by Paul Coyle and Eamon Sweeney, the gap could have been significantly less. After those scares however, Fanad found their stride again and scored two quick points. (1.12 – 1:05). Aodh Ruadh pulled another point back to see a 6 point gap between the teams with only 5 minutes to go in the second half before Eamon Sweeney scores a fine point to widen the margin slightly. (1:13 – 1:06).After another 2 points, Aodh Ruadh lose a man to a red card and Fanad use the extra man to finish the game with a flourish- two final points and a superb goal by Teddy McVeigh see Fanad win the game well with a 10 point margin. It finishes Gaeil Fhanada 2:15 – 1:08 Aodh Ruadh. The Fanad reserves top of the group and send a message to the team they will face in the next round – they are a well-oiled machine, and plan to make it to the very end of this season’s championship competition.Foireann Gaeil Fhánada Oisin Blaney, Shaun Coyle, Ciaran Coll, Barney McBride 0:01, Conor McGonigle, Paul Doogie Coyle, Kevin McGonigle, Eamon Sweeney 0:01, Colm McGonigle, Teddy McVeigh 2:03, Gary McGonigle 0:02, Jerry Diver Friel 0:02, Niall Carr 0:05, Shaun McGovern 0:01, Paddy Heraghty. This is the final game in group three of the Intermediate Championship, and with Fanad behind Aodh Ruadh on point going into the game, nothing but a win would be enough to see Fanad go through to the knockout stages of the competition. Fanad will be playing without their talisman Michael Sweeney who has a fractured shoulder bone after a collision with a Downings player in last week’s tense game.Fanad start the game well, defending well and putting pressure on the Aodh Ruadh players. Seami Nanny Friel wins a 45 after the third minute, which he drops short, leaving Seimi Coshia Friel an easy tap-in to score the first goal of the game. But Fanad can’t celebrate for long as Aodh Ruadh respond to that goal with a goal of their own- some sloppy defending by Fanad leading to an easy goal for the Aodh Ruadh fullforward. Immediately after that Fanad give away a free, leading to an Aodh Ruadh point, and that is immediately followed up by another Aodh Ruadh goal. Gaeil Fhanada 1:00 – 2:01 Aodh Ruadh.Poor passing and a lot of mis-kicked balls by Fanad are being hoovered up by the Ballyshannon men and they are punishing Fanad with score after score. Fanad find themselves 7 points behind after 18 (1:00 – 2: :04) mins and without Michael Sweeney are struggling badly in midfield. Marty McAteer and Seimie Coshia pick up yellow cards along with their Ballyshannon markers after some pushing and shoving in the build up to a 45 for Fanad, which is ultimately sent wide by Seami Nanny Friel.Seimi Coshia scores a goal in the 19th minute to close the gap between the sides slightly and Fanad finally start getting back into the game. 3 points by Seami Nanny Friel add to the Fanad tally and the local team seem to steady their nerves and find themselves just a point behind the Ballyshannon men. (Gaeil Fhanada 2:03 – 2:04). Fanad start to put pressure on the Ballyshannon defence and Jimmy Coyle addds his name to the scoresheet to see Fanad draw level with Aodh Ruadh. Ballyshannon reply with a point of their own but this is quickly cancelled out after Seami Nanny Friel points a free just before the referee blows the shistle for half time. (Gaeil Fhanada 2:05-2:05 Aodh Ruadh). The second half starts well for Fanad with Seami Nanny Friel pointing a free on the edge of the Aodh Ruadh rectangle, however some more poor passing and defending by the Fanad side see Aodh Ruadh score another point and goal. (Gaeil Fhanada 2:06 – 3: 06 Aodh Ruadh). Fanad find themselves fighting back again and points from Seamie Coshia Friel and Seamie Nanny Friel bring the margin back to a single point. (Gaeil Fhanada 2:08 – 3:06 Aodh Ruadh). Fanad collect the kickout, and Patrick McConigley does well to take on his marker and pass the ball down the field toward the Aodh Ruadh goal. Seamie Coshia Friel makes a fine effort to get through on goal but is fouled by a Ballyshannon man, winning a penalty for Fanad. Seami Nanny Friel easily lifts the penalty kick up over the right shoulder of the Aodh Ruadh keeper and Fanad find themselves in the lead for the first time since the 5th minute of the game. (Gaeil Fhanada 3:08 – 3:07 Aodh Ruadh). This lead galvanizes Fanad into action and they add two more points to their tally. Some more pushing and shoving sees Patrick McConigley, Frank Sweeney and an Aodh Ruadh player pick up yellow cards. Aodh Ruadh drive their free low towards the Fanad net, but Mark McConigley and Fergal Friel do very well to clear the ball away. Jimmy Coyle surges down the field and lays the ball off to Seimi Coshia Friel, but he sends his effort wide of the uprights.Aodh Ruadh use their kickout to drive down the field towards the Fanad goal, but Mark McConigley makes an excellent save in the mouth of the goal to deny them the three points.Seami Nanny Friel adds another three points to his personal tally and Fanad go 6 points ahead. (Gaeil Fhanada 3:13 – 3:07 Aodh Ruadh). Mark McConigley and Fergal Friel do some fantastic and fearless defending and keep Aodh Ruadh away from the goalmouth and the ball finds it’s way to Ryan McGonagle who scores a fine point of his own with time running out for Aodh Ruadh. Aodh Ruadh are awarded a free with 34 minutes of the second half played and choose to take their point. (Gaeil Fhanada 3:14 – 3:08 Aodh Ruadh).Mickey Mulhern blows the whistle for full time after 35 minutes and Fanad celebrate. They did well to regain their composure and wear down Aodh Ruadh to get the win today.
