Anand finishes second in Tata Chess

first_imgFive-time champion Viswanathan Anand had to be content with a second place finish following a draw with Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia in the 13th and final round of 73rd Tata Steel Chess tournament in Wijk Aan Zee, The Netherlands.Viswanathan AnandThe World Champion could draw a big consolation from the fact that he would be the number one ranked player all over again as the results here proved that he will be overtaking world number one Magnus Carlsen of Norway in the next rating list.Hikaru Nakamura of United States won the title after drawing his final round game with Wang Hao of China.Nakamura tallied 9 points in all, a half point more than Anand in this category-20 super tournament between 14-players.The American not only performed way beyond his rating of 2751 but also finished ahead of the world’s top four ranked players.Anand got the better position with his black pieces but could not find a breakthrough AS Nepomniachtchi simply got an impregnable position in the endgame arising out of a Sicilian defense game. The Indian ace settled for a draw in 37 moves.”Disappointing,” Anand said after the final results were out.”When I reached a plus-four score (Four wins and rest draws), I felt I was well on my way to a final victory but Hikaru just kept winning, picking up six points in a row, which was quite amazing.”But I’m not unhappy; it’s difficult to be unhappy with a plus-four score. It’s a pity I didn’t manage to win the tournament but I think I performed above my rating, which isn’t bad at all,” the World Champion said.advertisementThe third place was shared by Magnus Carlsen and Levon Aronian of Armenia who both scored 8 points apiece. The last round of the tournament turned out to be a damp with all the games ending in draws for the first time in the event this year.- With PTI inputslast_img read more

Technology Minister Wants More Space for ICT Sector

first_imgMONTEGO BAY – Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, Hon. Phillip Paulwell, is encouraging businesses in the private sector to help to create space for the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector. He said that the government has made available some US$20 million for that purpose, and he would be seeking to access more money specifically for the development of space within that sector. In emphasizing the feasibility of the venture, Minister Paulwell pointed out that Jamaica is well placed as the hub of the region in terms of access to the infrastructure for providing data services, and that fact should be used effectively.Minister Paulwell was delivering the keynote address at a Business Process Industry Association of Jamaica (BPIAJ), Breakfast Forum, at the University of The West Indies, Western Jamaica campus, in Montego Bay, on June 14.“I want to say to the Telecom’s (Telecommunication Companies), when we speak about this BPO or the ICT industry; we are not talking about providing services for Jamaica. With the technology now, you can reach every single spot on this globe, so the market is not Jamaica, the market is the globe,” he stated. The Minister pointed out that the Jamaican voice market is very small, when one begins to think globally, adding that eventually, “voice will be a give-away.”“But just imagine, if we were to create two million square feet of office space, establish plug and play facilities, telecoms in place, broad- band infrastructure in place and you fill those, can you imagine the business for the Telecom’s, and two million square feet is a drop in the bucket,” he emphasized. He argued that many of the missed opportunities for the provision of space for the IT sector are still available because of Jamaica’s location and culture. He added that data services should be viewed by the telecommunications companies as their bread and butter for the future, not so much the voice market.Minster Paulwell noted that said some amount of collaboration is necessary between the companies on how to penetrate the global marketplace. “I am preaching cooperation to enable us to access these opportunities,” he stated.CONTACT: BRYAN MILLERJIS REGIONAL OFFICEMONTEGO BAYlast_img read more

PV Sindhu is back Indian shuttler demolishes listless Chen Yufei to enter

first_imgSTR/AFP/Getty ImagesShe has been struggling this year but Olympic silver medalist PV Sindhu seems to be back to her best. Sindhu crushed China’s best hope and All England champion Chen Yufei in a one-sided contest 21-19, 21-10 at the 2019 Indonesia Open Super 1000 event in BWF World Tour. The match started on an even keel with Chen appearing in good form. But Sindhu showed great defence and managed to keep up with her Chinese opponent. The game was evenly poised at the first break in the first game. Both players were showing admirable defence and Yufei was playing some good shots. This allowed her to get a four-point lead. But then, Sindhu started to get momentum behind her and started playing some brilliant shots. What was impressive was Sindhu’s net play as she didn’t concede a single point when exchanging net shots. The first game went down to the wire but Sindhu managed to win it 21-19. The second game started well with the Chinese racing to a 4-0 lead. It seemed that the change of ends was favouring Yufei but then Sindhu tightened up her game and with her good shots turned the tables. After the mid-game break, it seemd that Yufei was out of steam or no longer interested in giving a fight. Sindhu bulldozed her opponent and raced to a comprehensive victory. She will now face Akane Yamaguchi in the final to win her first World Tour title this year.last_img read more
