UNESCO Holds Research Methodology Training for University Lecturers

first_imgThe United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) last week held a three-day training in research methodology for university lecturers. The training focused on sharpening the skills and techniques of university instructors in the methods of research in order to enhance their classroom presentations.“It is important as a lecturer to engage in research (of the subject matter) before making presentations and that helps to equip the students also.”Making the remark yesterday at the UL main campus during the opening session, the Deputy Secretary General of Liberian National Commission for UNESCO, representing the Ministry of Education (MOE), said the workshop was part of UNESCO’s commitment to contribute to the education sector of Liberia.He explained that UNESCO, the intellectual arm of the United Nations, is engaged in building the capacity of educators and strengthening university lecturers is part of that goal.The initiative came about when several UL professors wrote a proposal requesting the training through the Ministry of Education to UNESCO’s head office. UNESCO accepted the proposal and organized the workshop, aimed at sharpening the research skills of over 45 lecturers from leading universities in the country.We hope that they can take advantage of the research methodology program and build their interests in the area of research in preparing their classroom presentations, said Mr.  Harris, adding that at the end of the workshop, the instructors are expected to be more confident in delivering their classroom lectures and other teaching activities.“One of the functions of UNESCO is human capacity building and we will continue to support teachers to be well equipped in presenting their lessons,” said Mr. Harris.Also speaking, the executive secretary of the Association of Liberian Universities (ALU) and lead facilitator, Dr. Saaim Wisseh Naame, said the workshop would focus on qualitative research.  He hoped that all the participants will leave the workshop with the necessary expertise in research.Stressing the need for knowledge in quantities research and teaching methodology, he said many university lecturers are performing below the requisite capacity to teach. Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
