BlackBerry Ltd.’s shares soared Friday after its latest financial results topped expectations and it outlined plans for growth in autonomous driving, a push into health care and intentions to add significant engineering talent. The company beat expectations through growth in its enterprise software and services business, as well as in its fast-growing automotive division, John Chen, BlackBerry’s executive chairman and chief executive, said in an interview.“Transportation, especially when it comes to autonomous driven vehicles and connected car, that unit had done the best in the last quarter,” he said. The company, which keeps its books in U.S. dollars, said it earned US$43 million or eight cents per basic share in its latest quarter, more than double earnings of $19 million or four cents per basic share a year ago.On an adjusted basis, BlackBerry said it earned four cents per share for the quarter, beating the penny per share profits analysts on average had expected according to Thomson Reuters Eikon. The company’s shares were up $2.20 or 16.6 per cent to $15.49 in late-morning trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange. While overall revenue dropped to $210 million from $238 million last year, the automotive division saw 29 per cent revenue growth with more to come, said Chen.“It will continue to grow double-digit for the next couple quarters, so we think that is a big growth opportunity for BlackBerry.”The company recently announced a partnership with Ottawa-based technology accelerator L-SPARK to help small- and medium-sized businesses bring new products to market using its BlackBerry QNX automotive software.Chen said the company also plans to ramp up efforts in autonomous driving and other divisions.“You ask our own people, who are much more bullish than I am, they’re talking about adding a thousand engineers,” he said.“It’s going to be multi-years, I mean you can’t find a thousand engineers because there’s such high demand and short supply. But we do have the advantage that a lot of our development organization is in Canada, so we’re very closely tied to the university programs. So we’re going to hire a lot of engineers I’m sure.”But while technology development is ramping up on the automotive side, Chen said he’s more cautious than his colleagues as to when we’ll see fully autonomous vehicles take hold.He said the technology should be available and affordable in the next few years, but thinks infrastructure and policies on safety and other issues will push back a widespread rollout.“I’m encouraged for the future, I just think that most people think it’s going to happen faster than I think it will.”Companies in this story: (TSX:BB)

Clemson wide receiver Mike Williams (7) catches a touchdown pass from quarterback Deshaun Watson against North Carolina State at Memorial Stadium in Clemson, S.C., on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016. Credit: Courtesy of TNSSCOTTSDALE, Ariz — Ohio State redshirt junior quarterback J.T. Barrett versus Clemson junior quarterback Deshaun Watson is without question the main card in the Playstation Fiesta Bowl on Dec. 31. But one of the primary matchups is OSU’s surprisingly dominant secondary against Clemson’s star-studded receiving corps. When Clemson lost the national championship game to Alabama last season, 45-40, the Tigers were without wide receivers Deon Cain and Mike Williams. This time around, the two are healthy and have been nightmares for defenses all season. Williams has caught 84 passes and gained 1,171 yards with 10 touchdowns. Cain has 32 catches for 621 yards and nine touchdowns. The maturity of both Williams and Cain has made the difference in Clemson coach Dabo Swinney’s mind. He said that Williams and Cain are in the midst of their most productive season with the Tigers. It’s been great for (Deon Cain) to have Mike (Williams) there. It’s been great for Mike to have a guy like Deon there,” Swinney said. “For us to be able to roll those two guys in and out, it’s been a tremendous amount of production. If you just look at the production at that position and the amount of touchdowns, they’ve been a heck of a combination.”OSU’s secondary has statistically been one of the best in man coverage situations. Aside from the 19 interceptions and seven touchdowns off interceptions, cornerbacks Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley have excelled at defending the pass when put on an island. The Buckeyes rank fifth in the country with just 164.5 yards passing allowed per game.At safety, redshirt sophomore Malik Hooker and junior Damon Webb have been OSU’s security blanket. The two are responsible for seven of the team’s 19 interceptions and four of the seven pick-sixes — Hooker with six and three, respectively. OSU is second in the nation in yards allowed per passing attempt at 5.4.“They’re a great group,” Williams said. “They have guys that attack the ball in the air like receivers. They have hands like receivers. That’s probably one of the biggest differences.”Tigers’ tight end Jordan Leggett, who is third on the team with seven receiving touchdowns, said that OSU’s man coverage is challenging, but having four or five guys that have to be accounted for in the passing game gives the upper hand to Clemson in his eyes.“You just can’t leave (Williams) on an island with one of your corners because he’s going to win that matchup nine times out of 10,” Leggett said. “It’s just a matter of how (OSU) wants to play us. Whatever they do, they’re leaving someone else on an island with someone else. And any of our guys that we have here, they’re going to win that matchup no matter what.”Cain said that the receiving corps that has five guys with 30-plus receptions — Hunter Renfrow with 29 — has had so much success due to the play of Watson and the Clemson offensive line. The Clemson receiving corps has been able to win one-on-one matchups all season. The same can be said about OSU’s secondary. On Saturday at 7 p.m. ET, the two teams’ strengths, like they have all season, could define whose season ends and whose continues.“We have a lot of good, talented guys in our receiving corps and they have a lot of good DBs that can match up with us,” Cain said. “It comes down to who wants to win and who makes the best competitive plays. That’s what this game is going to be.”
Arsenal boss Unai Emery revealed his long-term admiration for Alexandre Lacazette with a surprising transfer revelationWhen the Spaniard first took charge of Paris Saint-Germain in 2016, then-Lyon striker Lacazette was among his top transfer targets for the club. The France international scored 129 and added a further 43 assists in 275 appearances for Lyon before Arsene Wenger scooped in and signed him for Arsenal. But things could have turned out different for Lacazette had the relationship between PSG and Lyon not been difficult.“When I arrived at PSG we were thinking about signing Lacazette,” said Emery, according to the Daily Mirror.“His quality and his characteristics we liked, and the people who were working at the club when we arrived, they said to us, ‘This player has the quality to play for PSG’.“He was at Lyon and it wasn’t easy to have the conversation or to sign a player from Lyon or for Lyon from PSG. But now we are speaking together with Laca every day.”After a difficult first season in the Premier League, Lacazette has since scored four goals in eight games for Arsenal this term.Daniel Farke, From mid-table in the Championship to the Premier League Manuel R. Medina – September 14, 2019 Norwich City manager, Daniel Farke, has taken his team from the middle of the table in the English Championship to play with the big boys in the Premier League.“Last year was his first year in the Premier League, it was a different league to the French League, a different position for him, a different rhythm,” continued Emery.“Not a different mentality, though, because he has a very good mentality and he gives himself very good chances to score. He is very efficient.“But he needs to continue his adaptation to us, to the Premier League and to its rhythm.“And this year we are looking at one step more in this level from last year.“We are very happy but my message to him is: ‘Every day, don’t stop. Don’t stop in training, don’t stop in matches’.“He must carry on to find his best performance, not just in matches but in each minute of the 90 minutes and he has to keep on doing that.“I believe in him — and in the other players — but in his characteristics, we need him to keep feeling well with his role in the team and with his quality.”
West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini urged Andy Carroll to remain patient with his recovery and added that he’s certain the Englishman will rediscover his best formCarroll’s six and half year spell at West Ham has been blighted by recurring injury problems, which have restricted him to just 136 appearances in total. However, the former Liverpool striker scored his first goal since April in West Ham’s 2-0 FA Cup win over Birmingham on Saturday after returning from an ankle injury. This would have come as a welcome boost for Carrol, who was told last month by Pellegrini that he will have to prove to the club why they should hand him a new contract.“We are very happy with how Andy played,” Pellegrini told the club website.Liverpool legend Nicol slams Harry Maguire’s Man United form Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Steve Nicol believes Harry Maguire has made some “horrendous mistakes” recently, and has failed to find his best form since joining Manchester United.“If you review his game, he scored, his play was good and he missed another chance to score, he cleared two or three aerial duels in our box, so in the way he plays, he will return to be the player we know he can be.“I never had any doubt Andy Carroll wants to stay here. He is happy here, he wants to play for the club, he is happy in London and he doesn’t want to go anywhere.“He wants to play like every player but he must be patient. When you come back from a long injury and you are not competing weekly, you have to be careful not to get another injury.“That’s why we are giving him some amount of minutes every game. I think if he recovers his shape and continues working every day of the week without any injuries there are not too many players with his quality.”The Hammers will next face Arsenal in a Premier League game this Saturday at their London Stadium.

Share Pablo Martinez Monsivais, APPresident Donald Trump talks with new White House Chief of Staff John Kelly after he was privately sworn in during a ceremony in the Oval Office with President Donald Trump, Monday, July 31, 2017, in Washington.Hoping to turn the page on a tumultuous opening chapter to his presidency, President Donald Trump insisted on Monday there is “no chaos” in his White House as he swore in retired Marine Gen. John Kelly as his new chief of staff. In an Oval Office ceremony, Trump predicted Kelly, who previously served as Homeland Security chief, would do a “spectacular job.” And the president chose to highlight the rising stock market and positive jobs outlook rather than talk about how things might need to change in his White House under Kelly.Trump on Friday ousted Reince Priebus as chief of staff and turned to Kelly, who he hopes will bring military discipline to an administration weighed down by a stalled legislative agenda, infighting among West Wing aides and a stack of investigations. While Trump is looking for a reset, he pushed back against criticism of his administration with this tweet: “Highest Stock Market EVER, best economic numbers in years, unemployment lowest in 17 years, wages raising, border secure, S.C.: No WH chaos!”In fact, economic growth averaged 2 percent in the first half of this year, a pace Trump railed against as a candidate and promised to lift to 3 percent. The stock market first hit a record under President Barack Obama and has kept growing. The unemployment rate, too, started to decline on Obama’s watch. And wage gains have been weak.Trump on Monday convened his first Cabinet meeting with Kelly at his side, telling his team it is “doing incredibly well” and “starting from a really good base.” On how he would deal with rising tensions with North Korea, Trump said only: “It will be handled.”Seated across from Trump was Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who has stayed on the job while Trump has publicly savaged him in interviews and on social media.Kelly’s success in a chaotic White House will depend on how much authority he is granted and whether Trump’s dueling aides will put aside their rivalries to work together. Also unclear is whether a new chief of staff will have any influence over the president’s social media histrionics.Former Trump campaign manager Cory Lewandowski, who was ousted from the campaign in June 2016, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he expected Kelly would “restore order to the staff” but also stressed that Trump was unlikely to change his style.“I say you have to let Trump be Trump. That is what has made him successful over the last 30 years. That is what the American people voted for,” Lewandowski said. “And anybody who thinks they’re going to change Donald Trump doesn’t know Donald Trump.”Kelly’s start follows a wild week, marked by a profane tirade from Trump’s new communications director, the president’s continued criticism of his attorney general and the failed effort by Senate Republicans to overhaul the nation’s health care law.In addition to the strains in the West Wing and with Congress, Kelly starts his new job as tensions escalate with North Korea. The United States flew two supersonic bombers over the Korean Peninsula on Sunday in a show of force against North Korea, following the country’s latest intercontinental ballistic missile test. The U.S. also said it conducted a successful test of a missile defense system located in Alaska.Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” that she hopes Kelly can “be effective,” and “begin some very serious negotiation with the North and stop this program.”Another diplomatic fissure opened Sunday when Russian President Vladimir Putin said the U.S. would have to cut its embassy and consulate staff in Russia by several hundred under new sanctions from Moscow. In a television interview, Putin indicated the cutback was retaliation for new sanctions in a bill passed by Congress and sent to Trump.Trump plans to sign the measure into law, the White House has said. After Putin’s remarks, the State Department deemed the cutbacks “a regrettable and uncalled for act” and said officials would assess the impact and how to respond to it.While Trump is trying to refresh his team, he signaled that he does not want to give up the fight on health care. On Twitter Sunday, he said: “Don’t give up Republican Senators, the World is watching: Repeal & Replace.”The protracted health care fight has slowed work on Trump’s other policy goals, including a tax overhaul and infrastructure investment. But Trump aides made clear that the president still wanted to see action on health care. White House budget director Mick Mulvaney said on CNN’s “State of the Union,” that senators “need to stay, they need to work, they need to pass something.”Asked if nothing should be voted on in Congress until the Senate votes again on health care, Mulvaney said: “Well, think — yes. And I think what you’re seeing there is the president simply reflecting the mood of the people.”On Saturday, Trump threatened to end required payments to insurance companies unless lawmakers repeal and replace the Obama-era health care law. He tweeted that if “a new HealthCare Bill is not approved quickly, BAILOUTS for Insurance Companies and BAILOUTS for Members of Congress will end very soon!”The payments reduce deductibles and co-payments for consumers with modest incomes. Trump has guaranteed the payments through July, but has not made a commitment after that.White House counselor Kellyanne Conway said on “Fox News Sunday” that Trump would make a decision on the payments this week.Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, who opposed the efforts to move a health bill forward this week, said on CNN that cutting the payments would “be detrimental to some of the most vulnerable citizens” and that the threat has “contributed to the instability in the insurance market.”The House has begun a five-week recess, while the Senate is scheduled to work two more weeks before a summer break.
By RYAN TARINELLI, Associated PressDALLAS (AP) — Attorneys for the family of a Black man who was killed in his own apartment by a White police officer accused Dallas officials of trying to “assassination his character” by releasing a report saying that authorities found marijuana in the victim’s apartment. At a news conference Friday, the lawyers also called for the firing of police officer Amber Guyger, who gunned down 26-year-old Botham Jean in his own apartment on Sept. 6. She has been booked on a preliminary charge of manslaughter and is free on bond. This photo from video released Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018, by the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office in Kaufman, Texas, shows Dallas police Officer Amber Guyger getting booked after turning herself in Sunday, Sept. 9 following the fatal shooting of Botham Jean in his own apartment. Guyger was arrested manslaughter and has since been released on bond. (Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office Jail via AP)Guyger told investigators she mistook Jean’s apartment for her own, which is right below his, and that upon entering the dark home, she believed she had encountered an intruder and shot him when he didn’t obey her verbal commands.Lee Merritt, one of the Jean family attorneys, said Friday that investigators wasted no time in digging for dirt they could use to smear Jean’s name. Within hours of Jean being shot, they asked a judge for a warrant to search his home for drugs, among other things.“On the night that he was killed, the Dallas Police Department investigators were interested specifically in finding information that could help assassinate his character,” Merritt said.Dallas police did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the criticism.Jean’s mother, Allison Jean, expressed disgust that on Thursday, as mourners at her son’s funeral were remembering him for his religious convictions and kindness, the results of that search of his home were released. They showed that, among the things, police found a small amount of marijuana — 10.4 grams — and a marijuana grinder.“To have my son smeared in such a way, I think shows that there (are people) who are really nasty, who are really dirty and are going to cover up for the devil Amber Guyger,” she said. She also called on police to release toxicology results from a blood sample taken from Guyger on the night of the shooting. The local Fox television affiliate, KDFW, was roundly criticized for its initial reporting on the release of the report on the search’s findings, drawing scorn from figures across the political spectrum for focusing on the marijuana, tweeting: “DEVELOPING: Search warrant: Marijuana found in Botham Jean’s apartment after deadly shooting.”On Twitter, the ACLU called the tweet an “attack on an innocent man.”Fox News contributor Guy Benson commented on Twitter, “Irrelevant. 100% irrelevant.”KDFW, which later updated its story and added more context, declined to comment Friday about its initial coverage of the search affidavit. At his funeral, Jean was described as talented and passionate man, who confided to his uncle that he might want to become prime minister of his native Caribbean island country of St. Lucia someday.Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings and Dallas Police Chief U. Renee Hall were among those who attended the hymn-filled funeral. Rawlings has described Jean as a young professional and man of faith who was “exactly the sort of citizen we want to have.”In Texas, being caught with that amount of marijuana is a class B misdemeanor punishable for up to 180 days in jail and/or a fine of up to $2,000.
What’s new in the hair trend this winter? Are you planning to let your hair flow the same boring way? Experts suggest going for two top knots or a French braid instead of tying your hair in a boring bun for a fun party. Here’s how you can try some stylish hairdos:French braid: Begin with using a dry shampoo on your lengths and ends to help create texture. Take a centre parting and braid your hair on both sides using the French braid technique. Continue braiding till you reach the nape area and secure it with rubber bands. Open up the braids a little bit and spray finishing spray for hold. Facebook made its distributed log system, called LogDevice available as an open source project, two weeks back. It is a highly scalable and fault-tolerant distributed data store for sequential data. LogDevice comes with features such as high write availability, consistency guarantees, non-deterministic record placement, and a local log store. LogDevice is widely used at Facebook. Existing use cases of LogDevice include stream processing pipelines, distribution of index updates in large distributed databases, machine learning pipelines, replication pipelines, and durable reliable task queues. LogDevice is designed from the ground up so that it can serve different logs with high reliability and efficiency at scale. It is also highly tunable which allows the use cases as mentioned above to be optimized for the right set of trade-offs when it comes to durability-efficiency and consistency-availability space. Let’s have a look at the key features of LogDevice. High write availability LogDevice comes with high write availability which is uncommon in most of the existing logging applications of Facebook. LogDevice efficiently separates record sequencing from record storage. It uses non-deterministic placement of records which improves the write availability and betters the tolerate temporary load imbalances caused by spikes in the write load on individual logs. Consistency Guarantees The consistency guarantees provided by a LogDevice log are similar to the ones provided by a record-oriented file system. It comes with built-in data loss detection and reporting. In case data loss occurs, the Log sequence numbers (LSNs) of all records that were lost gets reported to every reader attempting to read the affected log and range of LSNs. Although, there are no ordering guarantees provided for records of different logs. Non-deterministic record placement LogDevice has a different approach when it comes to record placement. First, the ordering of records in a log is decoupled from the actual storage of record copies. For each log in a LogDevice cluster, it runs a sequencer object whose only job is issuing the monotonically increasing sequence numbers as records. The sequencer runs either on a storage node or on a node which has been reserved for sequencing. After the record has been stamped with a sequence number, the copies of that record get stored on any storage node within a cluster. The LogDevice client library is capable of performing the reordering and occasional de-duplication of records. This makes sure that the records get delivered to the reader application in the order of their LSNs. Local Log Store The local log store of LogDevice is called LogsDB. LogsDB is a write-optimized datastore which has been designed to keep the number of disks seeks small and controlled. Also, the write and read IO patterns on the storage device are mostly sequential. The write-optimized data stores offer great performance when writing data, even if it belongs to multiple files or logs. Apart from that, LogsDB is quite efficient for log tailing workloads, which is a common pattern of log access where records are delivered to readers soon after they are written. These records are never read again except in rare cases such as massive backfills. LogsDB is built on top of RocksDB, which is an ordered durable key-value data store based on LSM trees. LogsDB act as a time-ordered collection of RocksDB column families. Each RocksDB instance is called a LogsDB partition. For more information, visit the official LogDevice website. About 80% of Czech over-the-top video-on-demand provider Topfun’s users access the service via connected TVs, according to Erik Uxa, project manager, VOD services, Topfun Media. “Smart TVs are what are mostly being used by customers,” said Uxa, speaking on a panel session at Informa’s Digital TV CEE conference yesterday.Uxa said that OTT providers had to target all devices in the market, regardless of the fragmented nature of the environment. As the OTT VOD industry was still new, it was too early to tell which devices would win out ultimately, and operators had to target as many as possible, he said. However, he said, in the Czech Republic connected TV platforms were proving to be the most popular currently.
YouTube comparing the image quality of a Janelle Monaé video in VP9 or legacy H.264 transcodes.YouTube has revealed that in the past year viewers have watched more than 25 billion hours of video encoded using its VP9 compression standard.Announcing the milestone, the video site said that it supports the open-source codec as it brings HD and 4K video quality at “half the bandwidth used by other known codecs.”“VP9 unlocks the burgeoning world of 4K videos. At larger video sizes, VP9 actually gets even more efficient than its predecessors, so uninterrupted 4K content can now be streamed by a significant and growing part of the YouTube audience,” said YouTube software engineer Steven Robertson in a company blog post.“The amount of 4K video uploaded to YouTube has more than tripled in the past year, and VP9 helps us plan for improved streaming into the future.”Google’s VP9 video compression codec is the internet giant’s alternative to the H.265 next-generation video compression standard.Speaking at the TV Connect conference in London last year, Francisco Varela, global director of mobile and platform partnerships, YouTube, said that VP9 can help YouTube deliver a more TV-like experience and provide a better way to overcome bandwidth limitations than financial payment to operators for privileged access to networks.
